Melanie Whyte: Singing Teacher and Coach

How to be ready for your lesson:

*When in person, bring something to write notes with, any sheet music or music books you are working with, and a bottle of water if you want that.

*When we meet on Zoom, gather your earbuds or headphones, something to write notes with, any sheet music you are working with, a computer and another device if you have one or just your phone or ipad if that works better for you, a straw, a cork (!?) and maybe a glass of water. Set up in a place close to your router where you can be comfortable singing. Plug in your device if possible. Aim to be facing a window or other light source rather than having it behind you.

How to practice: (with a day off during the week, and no need to practice on your lesson day) is essential for developing your singing skill and for reaching your singing goals. Singing exercises helps you to develop stamina, flexibility, healthy voice habits and ease in your singing. Practice is also necessary for learning the songs you want to sing and for picking up new skills such as sight reading or ear training. If you are someone who likes to practice without being heard by your family or roommates, make sure to work out a plan with those people so you can fit in your practice time in a way that makes you comfortable. Without regular practice, you will not be able to fully benefit from your investment in singing lessons. There is a practice record available through the Student Portal. Use it if it helps you! Sing with awareness – pay attention – be curious about what your voice can do!

Record your Lesson: There is much to be learned by listening with awareness to your singing and to feedback you are given and how you adjust to it. Challenge yourself to listen to your lesson recording. Make notes to help you remember what and how to practice.
